FRQ Scoring Practice: Score Like an AP Reader

AP readers score every free-response part against a scoring guide. Here you read a real-format FRQ, its scoring guide, and a student’s answer. Decide how many points it earns, then see how a reader would score it and exactly why. Once you know what earns a point, your own answers get sharper fast.

Set up your practice

There are 84 scored student responses to all four FRQ types from this site’s FRQ bank. FRQ 1 answers come from sample Business Canvas Projects. Some earn the point, some miss it, and some look good but fall into a common trap.

Which FRQs?

Why practice scoring?

Most lost FRQ points come from answers that sound right but don’t do what the task verb asks: a description that only repeats a fact, an explanation that names an action without saying how it helps, or a comparison with evidence for only one side. Scoring other students’ answers trains you to catch those gaps in your own writing before the exam does.

When you are ready, write full answers on the FRQ practice page, then check them against the scoring guide the same way.
